#1 - Cheerful/Abracadabra/Derbies

Shared Ideas For
Scout Law Point: Cheerful Theme Abracadabra
Interest Topic:
Derbies

Opening Brain Teaser - This would be a great thing to write on the chalk or white board for boys and parents to have something to think about while they wait for everyone to arrive at a Pack or Den Meeting.  (An idea you could use would be to reward the cub scouts a piece of candy if they get it right).
WHO AM I?
"I am a helmet on the ground but so afraid of strangers, I disappear, inside my hat.  The world is full of dangers."
Brain Teaser Picture

Gathering Activity
The gathering activity is something for the cub scouts to do while everyone is arriving at your pack meeting.

Food Coloring (optional
Safety Glasses and non-latex disposable gloves
Instructions:
1) Wearing safety glasses and gloves, pu8t the glue and water in the plastic bag.
2) If you would like to make colored slime, add a few drops of food coloring.
3) Seal the bag and squeeze it gently to mix.

String Arrow of Light Plaque

NOTE: If you want to make a few of these Arrow of Light Boards ahead of time and you do not know the date the boys are going to earn their Arrow of Light, you could leave the name and date off and later on order a small metal plate with the boy's name and date from an awards/plaque business and attached it to the bottom of the plaque.
Materials: A board 8" x 18", Sand Paper, printer, printer paper, cutting board, Arrow of Light Pictures 1st & 2nd half, Wood Burning Kit, scotch tape, pencil, T-square ruler, , blue painters tape, light wood stain, hammer, 1" Panel Board Nails (Dark Brown), Cross Stitching String in these colors: Medium Blue ((825), Orange (740), Red (666), Light Blue (827), Dark Blue (820), Bright Yellow (307).
Directions:

1) Sand your piece of wood. You can round off the edges but this is optional.

2) Print off the words ARROW OF LIGHT (In all capital letter) in the font, Calibri (Body) at 100.
3) Print off the name of the cub scout and the date he earned his Arrow Of Light using the font, Calibri Light at 70.

4) Cut the paper into strips as shown in the picture above. Then using a piece of paper (Green in this case) align the words in a straight line and tape them together.  Lastly cut off all excess paper.  Do this for both the phrase "Arrow of Light" and the scout's name and date.

5) Using Painter's tape, tape the word strips to a window with the printed side facing the window.  Then using a pencil scribble the lead graphite onto the back of the paper over the letters.

6) Using a T-square ruler, center the "ARROW OF LIGHT" phrase at the top and the scout's name and date at the bottom with the print side up. Then take a pencil and trace applying pressure, to the outside of the ARROW OF LIGHT letters and over the letters of the scout's name and date.

7) When you lift off the strip of paper, you should see the letters transferred onto the wood.  Then using a wood burning kit, you can wood burn the words permanently into the wood.

8) Stain and lacquer your board.

9) Print off the 1st and 2nd half's of the Arrow of Light picture.
1st Half:https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Wh3p3K-eJGaH3kWQ9ztkbC9TZELW5MQJ
2nd Half:https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SzNNfiJT_mhQ67Hrk52sAdNka_PYIhcV
10) With a paper cutter, cut off a strip of paper from the edge of the heart  to the edge of the paper, so the inside of the heart on both papers can be placed together to make a heart.

11) Tape the pages together.  When this is done, you should have a complete picture of the arrow.

12) Cut off excess paper around the arrow.

13) Centering the picture of the arrow on the 8" x 18" board, tape it down.  Then take the 1" Panel Board Nails and hammer them in at every dot located on the arrow.  When you are done take off the paper.

14) You are now ready to put the craft string on.  Each color represents a rank level of cub scouting.  MEDIUM BLUE  = Bobcat; ORANGE = Tigers; RED  = Wolfs; LIGHT BLUE = Bears; DARK BLUE = Webelos; YELLOW = The Arrow of Light

15) Starting with the Yellow #307 string tie the end to the very last nail in the fletching of the arrow. Then begin to pull the string up the shaft circling each nail along the way and keeping the string passing along one side of the nails. Then pull it around the point of the arrow again circling the string around each nail. Return back through the point of the arrow, down the shaft to the last ray in the sun. (Make sure that when you are returning, the string passes along the other side of the nails). Proceed to draw the string up through each ray and then coming back along the edge of the sun and back down the shaft of the arrow through the fletching (Be sure to circle every nail you pass along the way). Tape the end of the yellow string to the board somewhere out of the way. (Do not cut or tie off the yellow string yet).

16) Using the Medium Blue string #825, tie the end of the string to the bottom nail of the first fletch. Pull the string to the other side of the fletch circling every nail going up one side of the nails and coming back on the other side of the nails. Repeat (Step 3) so that there is a double layer of string.  Tie off the ends leaving about 2" of string in length.  This will enable you to retie the ends if they comes loose while working with the other craft string.

17) Repeat step #16  with the other colors.  NOTE: DO NOT CUT OFF THE 2" ENDS AFTER TYING THEM OFF LIKE SHOWN IN THE PICTURE.  LEAVE THIS STEP FOR WHEN YOU FINISH APPLYING GLUE.

18) With the yellow string, repeat winding it around the arrow a 2nd time to create a second layer on the shaft, arrow point and the sun and rays.  When done tie it off.

18) Make sure all the string is taut. Retighten and retie any knots if needed. Then unlike the picture; FIRST apply the glue to the knots and rub it in.  Let it dry.  THEN cut the ends off.

Magic Trick - Step-Through Post Card
Reference: Cub Scout Leader How To Book page: 5-51

Materials: Scissors & a 5x7 post card.
Directions:
"Fold the card lengthwise and make cuts on the folded side, as shown by the dotted lines in the illustration.  Then turn the card around and make cuts in the other direction, almost to the folded edge.  Open the card and cut along line a-b.  Carefully open out the card, and you will have a ring large enough to step through."
Note: When I tried this trick I found that making 9 cuts along the folded edge and 8 cuts along the open edges made a larger paper circle for me to get through.  Also, you can use cardstock paper and cut it to be 5x7 if you do not have a postcard around.
