Courteous/How the West Was Fun/Cub Scout Hiking

For August's Round Table We Shared Ideas For
September's SLP: Courteous Theme How the West Was Fun Interest Topic: Cub Scout Hiking

Chalkboard Riddle - This would be a great thing to write on the chalk or white board for boys and parents to have something to think about while they wait for everyone to arrive at a Pack or Den Meeting.  (An idea you could use would be to reward the cub scouts a piece of candy if they get it right).
WHAT ANIMAL AM I?
"One hundred balls of green and blue just look like eyes behind me, man. I shudder, shake, and turn to you.  As birds go, I'm your biggest fan!"
*Answer is at the end of this section. (scroll down)
(Chalkboard Riddle was taken from the book "Just Joking Animal Riddles" by J. Patrick Lewis; page 5&6)
The Gathering Activity
-The gathering activity is something for the cub scouts to do while everyone is arriving at your pack meeting.
Snake In My Boot Game
This activity was taken from "How The West Was Fun" pack meeting plans. Here is the link:  https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/cubscouts/pdf/2017/310-842(17)_September_Courteous.pdf
Materials:
2 buckets or other plastic containers, 2 cowboy boots or containers decorated to look like boots, Fake Snakes (rubber, chenille stem, etc.), 2 pairs of tongs.
Instructions:
Fill the two cowboy boots with an equal number of fake snakes.  Divide Scouts into two teams, and have them stand behind the starting line.  Place a boot at the line in front of each team.  At the signal, the first player for each team removes a snake from their boot with the tongs and races to put it in their teams's bucket.  That player then runs back to the starting line and passes the tongs to the next player in line.  Each player repeats the process until all snakes are remove from the team's boot and transferred to their bucket. The first team to move all of the snakes to the bucket wins.

Star Constellations Gazers (Made from Toilet Paper Rolls)

These would be great to make for a Pack Meeting in the Fall when it gets dark earlier in the evening.  The Cub Scouts can use these star gazers to become familiar with the constellations.  Then it would be fun to go outside to see if they can spot the constellations in the sky!
Here is the site that explains how to make these plus they have a template for you to print off: http://www.literaryhoots.com/2015/05/constellations-astronomy-for-kids.html

Water Bottle Holder - (Learning Knots)

The goal with this project is to help the boys learn some knots.  In this project you will be doing the Taut-line Hitch, the Square Knot, the Overhand Knot and the Bowline Knot.  It would be a great idea to make this Rope Water Bottle Holder a week before going on a hike.

Materials: 4 different colors of Bonnie Craft Cord 4mm width (I found it at Hobby Lobby), 1 Biner per Cub Scout (Looking in the camping section for these), Tape measure, scissors, Lighter and a regular water bottle.
Directions:

1) Cut each color craft cord to be 8 feet long.

2) Melt the ends so that they do not fray while you are making the Water Bottle Holder.

3) In the center of each of the four cords, hook them together so they are intertwined.

4) (1ST ROUND) Using the Taut-line Hitch, make the knot as close to the center of the other ropes as possible.  The rope you are working with will become uneven.  If this is too drastic, undo and redo the knot. (When making the knot try making the loops smaller. This might help).  If the boys still have difficulty, cut another rope that is longer.  Note: The 8 foot rope will accommodate some unevenness.  Repeat for all the different color cords.

5) (2ND ROUND) Using the Square Knot, Join the opposite color cords that are next to each other about an inch from the previous four knots.
6) (3RD ROUND) Repeat making the square knots another inch from the previous 4.

7) (4TH ROUND) Repeat making the square knots an inch and a half from the previous 4.

8) (5TH ROUND) Repeat making the square knots an inch and a half from the previous 4.

9) (6TH ROUND) Repeat making the square knots an inch and a half from the previous 4.

10) If you put a water bottle in at this point, it should look like this.

11) Take all the cords and make an Overhand Knot about 2 1/2 to 3 inches from the top of the water bottle.

12) About 2 to 3 inches from the Overhand Knot, make a Bowline Knot. The pictures show the steps.

13) About an inch and a half from the Bowline Knot, tie an Overhand Knot with each pair of the same color cords as shown in the picture.

15) Cut the excess of the cords off and melt the ends with a lighter to keep them from fraying. Now you are done!
